The first announcement and teaser came early 2006, since then there has been only silence. Leaving fans in complete darkness with anticipation and skeptical theories. Over the years I have been one of those faithful Square Enix fans to slowly lose my loyalty and faith within the company to actually go through with what they claim. I feel foolish, oddly betrayed to believe these trailers meant for something greater. This was going to be the first Final Fantasy that was really getting my blood pumping in a long time. Since Final Fantasy X I have felt a lack of passion and will to push themselves even harder to make a great game.
You see, even though with the prior success of Final Fantasy XIII gamer’s are still not satisfied. Feeling robbed of their time and money. Lightning with her mismatched ganged are merely a reflection of the greatness Square Enix once was. A guise if you will. It lacked that certain something. Perhaps the new ATB or no option of an open world to explore your hearts content? Hey, cut them some slack. Maybe they wanted to uproot and try something different, adapting to the new era of gaming. Changing to survive. Is it even fair of us to judge this ever so dying breed of games we loved, the ones we grew up on?
With all this to keep in mind, knowing all the new titles Square Enix keeps pushing out on handheld consoles for the majority with endless announcements of games that have you on the edge of your seat, but from past experiences make you second guess if the game is real or just another one of their fictitious trailers?
Then comes the rumors, the game was quietly cancelled, waiting for everyone to forget it even existed. Why must everything be so secretive? Don’t we deserve to know what’s going on? After all we are the consumers. I’m tired, frustrated, angry and down right pissed at Square Enix. You make an announcement and show us an amazing trailer, one that may be the next big Final Fantasy… only to never hear of it again? What a load of shit. Total and utter shit.
As the rumors continue that Versus XIII is no more, I feel the rage of a thousand nerds boil under my skin. I start to research every site coming to this conclusion. It all did seem true. I cut my losses, in hopes of trying to move on.
If you’re still reading this, congratulations. I could of just cut straight to the point but sometimes spilling your guts on to that fresh pavement makes for a very dramatic entrance.
As of late July I have obtained information which Square Enix in fact does confirm the existence of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Today, Square Enix head Yoichi Wada confirmed that he just came out of a Final Fantasy Versus XIII meeting.
According to Wada’s tweet, “There’s someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha…Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it’d knock you off your feet~lol”
Okay, you can all breath easy now. Stop holding your breath, if you’re even still alive. I’ve been holding mine for the past 6 years. My lungs need some fresh air. Will Versus finally be that breath of fresh air? Or will I finally roll over in my grave?
