As you may have noticed, we have not been doing well at keeping the site or podcast updated.  This site is a hobby for all of the contributors and we all rely on free time.  Sadly, this is something we have not had because real life doesn’t care about the internet.  I wanted to put this out there so everyone can understand…We have not abandoned the site.  We are victims to real life events and our time to update the site has become scarce.   With all of that said, we are not going away.  Content/podcast may be a little scarce for a while, but we will update as best as we can.  Hopefully, in the coming weeks/months we will get back to where we were.  Providing you with all of the fun and geeky news you search for.  Please just bare with us as we work out life’s events.  Thank you for all of your support!

This is a little behind, but since Doctor Who is starting again this weekend I felt like I should inform you.  If you don’t know, BBC is running a 5 part mini-series online leading up to the first episode of Doctor Who called “Pond Life”.  The series is 5 brief minute long shorts showing some of the shenanigans that happens when we’re not watching.  Tomorrow will be the last webisode…so if you’re a Doctor Who fan go check them out!  The first installment is above.

If you’re a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, chances are you are familiar with the Gamers series. The first, low budget Gamers movie went off to become an underground hit. In 2008, The Gamers: Dorkness Rising expanded on the universe and is now a cult classic within the gaming community. And now, they are back to continue the tradition, with the filming of the third installment – Gamers: Hands of Fate.

If you were a fan of the first two films, if you know to hide behind a pile of dead bards, if you play Dungeons and Dragons, or if you’re just a geek who believes in supporting local and indie projects, head over to Kickstarter and donate a few bucks to help make this film a reality.

If you’re like me the wait for the Doctor can seem like forever so starting Monday, August 27 and continuing through the week the BBC will begin showing “The Pond Life”. Not much is known about the 5 part mini-series at the moment but the BBC blog had this to say.

Featuring the Doctor, Amy and Rory, this five-part mini-adventure premieres on this site at noon on Monday with parts 2-5 stripped daily across the week. Written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Saul Metzstein, the omnibus version of Pond Life will be shown on the BBC’s Red Button on Saturday, 1st September.

Chris Chibnall commented, ‘Pond Life provides us with a lovely opportunity to catch-up with Amy and Rory since we saw them at the end of the last series. It opens with the Ponds at home and gives us an insight in to just what happens when the Doctor drops in and out of their lives. Travelling with the Doctor is one of the greatest things you can do, but it’s fun to spend a few moments looking at the chaos he can also bring.’

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer, said ‘Chris has written a beautiful, heartfelt and wickedly funny piece about the adventures the Ponds have been having with the Doctor since we last saw them on-screen. It’s not long till the series itself will be back with a vengeance – but in the meantime, Pond Life is a truly heart-warming piece about our best-loved companions and their madcap relationship with their raggedy Doctor.’

 

“The Pond Life” sounds like an excellent lead in to the new series and I cannot wait to see the new adventures of the Doctor and co.

I have always been a .Hack fan.  I watched .Hack//Sign and played through most of the original .Hack games.  Lately I have been catching up on the anime series which made me think a few things.  With all of the MMOs out there, why has no one tried to introduce some sort of hidden event like .Hack?  WOW always has world, seasonal, and end game events…What if they decided to leave one little NPC to drive a hidden quest line that could tie in to reality?  This type of event would be perfect for folks like me who want to play the game, but not spend every day doing daily quests or dungeons.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about I urge you to look into the .Hack//Sign anime series.  What do you think?  Is this something that would be a game changer for all the MMORPGs out there?

This past weekend Trekkies from all over the nation gathered in Las Vegas for Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Convention. I attended this event and, as always, it is quite an experience to be surrounded by people who love (are obsessed) with the same thing.

This year marked the 25th Anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation and notable TNG cast members were present, including the hilarious Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn (to name a few).  For me, the highlight of the weekend was the Star Trek: Voyager reunion. Kate Mulgrew is surprisingly hilarious and the chemistry between the cast members was electric and entertaining. If you get a chance, this panel is definitely worth watching.

The next batch of single player DLC for the hit game Mass Effect 3 has just received an official release date via the @Bioware twitter handle. The DLC will be available for download on Xbox 360, PS3, PC’s on August 28th 2012 with European PS3 players joining in the following day of August 29th.

Early details of the Leviathon DLC indicate Shepard will be hunting down and possibly allying with a rouge Reaper. Bioware also released a batch of new wallpapers to celebrate the release.

You have to give credit to Masashi Hamauzu for stepping up and really delivering the music Final Fantasy deserves. He had some big shoes to fill, Nobuo Uematsu is not any easy composer to replace. It was a shock to hear that after nearly 20 years Nobuo Uematsu decided his time was done.

Masashi Hamauzu was first hired on to assist Nobuo Uematsu with the score for Final Fantasy X.  He was lead composer for Final Fantasy XIII’s soundtrack. Masashi was also the main composer for Dirge of Cerberus , which was performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. As of January 20, 2010, he has left Square Enix. What a short lived but phenomenal career. Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 are among my new favorite gaming soundtracks.

So who composed Final Fantasy XIII-2s OST? The Star Onion’s bass player Naoshi Mizuta. He is well known for composing the music for Street Fighter Alpha and Rockman & Forte. Naoshi quit Capcom to work for Square Enix after seeing a recruitment ad. His first job was to compose for Parasite Eve II. Later, Naoshi was tasked to compose along side with Nobuo Uematsu for Final Fantasy XI. He is now the main composer for the game.

Naoshi did a great job with the new OST. The soundtrack does have a few pop songs, but it’s not bad… just different. Reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy X-2. I haven’t been able to listen to the full soundtrack but so far I adore the opening title song, Wish.

What do you think about the changes Square Enix has made?

Last week Marvel released the first issue of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.  If you’ve listened to the podcast, you know that I have recently gotten back into comics.  I always ignored them as a kid because I hated reading, but I appreciate comics (and reading) more now that I’m all grown up. I downloaded the first issue through Comixology on day one and I have to say, it’s pretty epic.  Today was the release of the second and it was just as good.  For those of you who don’t want spoilers and are Marvel fans, I highly suggest picking this up or downloading it.  So far the story is interesting, but in order to fully enjoy it you will need to not analyze things.  Impressions and spoilers (if you haven’t read it) after the break.

 The first issue focuses on the origin of why Deadpool goes off killing everyone along with the attack on the Fantastic Four.  It doesn’t show exactly how three of the four are killed, but it has some pretty intense hints and life moments.  To me, this makes up for the lack of huge fight sequences.

It starts off with the demise of the Fantastic Four and goes into the origin of hostility.  Essentially, Professor X has reached the end of his rope trying to sort out Deadpool’s mind and resorts to having him committed to a “specialist”.  The specialist turns out to be “Psycho man”.

My take from the comic was Psycho Man is trying to control Deadpool for his own means.  However, he wasn’t prepared for the voices in Deadpool’s head.  Essentially, after trying to gain control of Deadpool, a switch flips in his mind that eliminates the multiple personalities we’ve grown to love and enjoy and a singular voice emerges.  This is what sets Deadpool on his destructive path.  At the end a character is killed which seems to say that this series will break down the fourth wall.

At the recent EVA-EXTRA live screening in Japan it was finally revealed that the release date for Evangelion 3.0: Q will be the 17th of November this year! Notice how Eva 1.0 and 2.0 trailers are shown first. Is Gainax trolling us? Perhaps, you’ll consider it a possibility after watching this trailer.

Again, the first two movie trailers followed by… what seems to be a teaser for 3.0? At least they finally have announced a date.

For the past two years we’ve been given tiny hints as to when the release is. A few times the release date has been pushed back due to issues unknown. Here are the other short sneak peaks you’ve been drooling over.

In the middle of the night last night, the BBC and BBC America released the first trailer for the upcoming series of Doctor Who.  It’s 90 seconds long and full of Daleks, a baby weeping angel, and my personal favorite of dinosaurs on a space ship.  I just can’t contain how excited I am for this.

The first announcement and teaser came early 2006, since then there has been only silence. Leaving fans in complete darkness with anticipation and skeptical theories. Over the years I have been one of those faithful Square Enix fans to slowly lose my loyalty and faith within the company to actually go through with what they claim. I feel foolish, oddly betrayed to believe these trailers meant for something greater. This was going to be the first Final Fantasy that was really getting my blood pumping in a long time. Since Final Fantasy X I have felt a lack of passion and will to push themselves even harder to make a great game.

You see, even though with the prior success of Final Fantasy XIII gamer’s are still not satisfied. Feeling robbed of their time and money. Lightning with her mismatched ganged are merely a reflection of the greatness Square Enix once was. A guise if you will. It lacked that certain something. Perhaps the new ATB or no option of an open world to explore your hearts content? Hey, cut them some slack. Maybe they wanted to uproot and try something different, adapting to the new era of gaming. Changing to survive. Is it even fair of us to judge this ever so dying breed of games we loved, the ones we grew up on?

With all this to keep in mind, knowing all the new titles Square Enix keeps pushing out on handheld consoles for the majority with endless announcements of games that have you on the edge of your seat, but from past experiences make you second guess if the game is real or just another one of their fictitious trailers?

Then comes the rumors, the game was quietly cancelled, waiting for everyone to forget it even existed. Why must everything be so secretive? Don’t we deserve to know what’s going on? After all we are the consumers. I’m tired, frustrated, angry and down right pissed at Square Enix. You make an announcement and show us an amazing trailer, one that may be the next big Final Fantasy… only to never hear of it again? What a load of shit. Total and utter shit.

As the rumors continue that Versus XIII is no more, I feel the rage of a thousand nerds boil under my skin. I start to research every site coming to this conclusion. It all did seem true. I cut my losses, in hopes of trying to move on.

If you’re still reading this, congratulations. I could of just cut straight to the point but sometimes spilling your guts on to that fresh pavement makes for a very dramatic entrance.

As of late July I have obtained information which Square Enix in fact does confirm the existence of Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Today, Square Enix head Yoichi Wada confirmed that he just came out of a Final Fantasy Versus XIII meeting.

According to Wada’s tweet, “There’s someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha…Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it’d knock you off your feet~lol”

Okay, you can all breath easy now. Stop holding your breath, if you’re even still alive. I’ve been holding mine for the past 6 years. My lungs need some fresh air. Will Versus finally be that breath of fresh air? Or will I finally roll over in my grave?

Today EA announced that the Bioware created MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, will be going free to play this fall.  Players will be able to enjoy the game up to level 50 with a few restrictions.   The restrictions prevent players from accessing new content and some advanced player features, not sure what those are yet, but some of the restrictions can be unlocked by using Cartel Coins.  No specific date was given, but it is coming.  I haven’t played an MMO for quite some time, but I may just have to try this out.

E3 has traditionally been held at the LA Convention Center with a few exceptions.  However, at the end of this years E3 no dates or locations were revealed due to some conflicts with the city of LA and maybe other things.  Today on twitter, the ESA announced that E3 will continue to be held in LA through 2015.  The 2013 E3 event will be held on June 11th through June 13th. Here’s hoping me make it next year!

For those of you who haven’t been paying attention Fall of Cybertron continues where High Moons beloved previous game War for Cybertron left off. There are a number of post on the site talking about the game but if you need any extra incentive to take a look at this one check out the two trailers below.

Silent Hill is probably my favorite Video Game movie.  It’s also one of the few game based movies that was pretty close to the actual game instead of being like Super Mario Brothers.  I’ve been waiting for a new Silent Hill movie for a while and I can’t wait.  Check out the trailer above.

Hello everyone!  I wanted to take a minute of my crazy life to keep the faithful readers informed.  When I started Unyielding Geekery, my main goal was to provide a fun and informative podcast going every week.  Over time, it has evolved into turning the site into a full blown blog and podcast.  I am paying for the hosting of this site on my own.  I have the random ads placed sporadically, but no money has come to us.  

So, the site itself has become a hobby of myself and everyone else who contributes.  I have managed to gather some wonderfully talented bloggers, but I do not pay them.  Since I don’t pay them, they post when they can.  Since all of us have our own day jobs it is hard to update as much as we would like.  Myself, for example, I’m limited to my posting times because of work and most of the things I want to post would come out several hours after other major sites have already posted the details.  I will not let that discourage me from posting, but my day job is what prevents me from posting faster.

With all of that said, please know that all of us here at Unyielding Geekery strive to bring you the most up to date information, but the podcast(s) come first.  I would love to provide updates to the world as fast as Joystiq, Kotaku, and even Gawker.   Life is a hurdle we need to overcome.  The podcast is what separates us from everyone else.  It can be funny, normal chat, or even completely random…but we want to entertain you!  Please accept my apology for the lack of posts and I ask that you follow us and give us a chance to help grow your geeky knowledge.

As the brand new Code Geass OVA nears more and more information is being leaked. Is it me or does some of these new characters resemble a few of the older ones from the last two seasons? Perhaps CLAMP will intertwine both stories. The new series is directed by Kazuki Akane (Tenkuu no Escaflowne, Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e) will be released August 4th, 2012.

I’m a little surprised it took so long for someone to think of this, but it’s worth it.  Neo tries to escape working the weekend.  Enjoy!

By now you are most likely fully aware of this, but last night one moron ruined the lives of many people.  James Holmes was attending a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises and decided to turn it into a tragic event by throwing tear gas into the theater and shooting a gun into the audience.  His act of stupidity has killed 12 people and injured another 59.  

James Holmes was watching the movie when about half way through he left through the emergency exit, propping the door open, went to his car to “suit up”, and then returned with the tear gas and weapons.  After his shooting rampage he awaited police and his arrest.  Now, he has spoken to the police saying he dyed his hair red and is “the Joker”.   This post is not really meant to inform you of the tragedy since it is national news, but what does this mean for fans, comics, movies, and more?  Several major theater companies have issued “proper movie attire” rules which ban costumes to those who would enthusiastically dress up for a midnight premiere.  I think this is wrong, but I understand the thought process.

This change was made today after the events had unfolded, but what will movie theaters, Comic Cons, and all other fan events start to do since it is such a huge part of the culture?  Will movie companies start re-thinking comic movies?  There is a lot that can happen based on this one persons actions.

Our condolences and well wishes go out to all families and friends effected by these events.

Comic Con has ended and with it now over, Capcom has released their Comic Con trailer for Resident Evil 6.  I have to say, the game looks amazing.  Check it out above and let us know what you think.

I have been fighting the urge to watch Adventure Time for a while now.  I saw a little bit of one episode and thought it was entertaining, but it also left me thinking I would get addicted if I started to watch more episodes.  After watching the above trailer, along with a glowing endorsement from Annette, I may just have to start.  What do you think about this trailer and the show?

Add another anime to the list of ones that I’ve never heard of.  Today, Capcom sent out an official announcement (with screenshots) of the upcoming game JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD Ver.  This 2d fighter is based off of the anime series with the same name.  The game was apparently released on the Dreamcast 8 years ago and has been remade into an HD Xbox Live/PSN release.

The games online matchmaking will utilize the same type of system as  Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel Vs Capcom 3.  You will earn battle points for individual characters and player points for yourself through your fights.  These points will be utilized to help increase player skill and move up through the leader boards.

The cool new online feature will allow an 8 player multiplayer lobby allowing players to host fights with two players and the other 6 watching.  Then, if you win, the loser is left to watch and the next player joins in.  You will also be able to record and share fights to gloat or have yourself laughed at.  JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD Ver will be released on Aug 21st through PSN for $19.99 and Aug 22nd on Xbox Live for 1600 MSP.  Screen shots are after the break.

 If you’ve listened to the podcast, you know that I wasn’t a huge comic book fan until recently.  Everything I knew about comic heroes and villains came from cartoons and maybe an occasional comic.  Deadpool is one of the characters I always thought was cool, but I never spent any time looking into.  Well, a new Deadpool game was announced this weekend and comic con and it makes me want to read up on the fellow.  Check out the trailer above and let us know what you think!

Today at Comic Con, Microsoft announced a new limited edition Halo 4 Console.  This edition comes with a Halo 4 Themed 320 GB console, two limited edition controllers, a standard version of Halo 4, a wired headset, and tokens for Halo themed avatar items from Xbox Live.  The light around the Xbox power button, as well as the guide button on the controller, will glow blue instead of the standard green.  The console itself will retail for $399.99 and is available for pre order now, but releasing on November 6th .  The controllers will also be sold separately for $59.99 and should be available towards the end of October.  A few shots of the controller and the packaging of the Xbox are after the break.

On June 23, 2012, I was able to participate in one of my deepest, darkest fantasies. I ran the zombie-infested 5K in Knightstown, IN and it was everything I dreamed it would be. I was able to participate in a role-play of how I hope the world will end with hundreds of other zombie enthusiasts.

Reed Street Productions created Run For Your Lives, an organization that  holds zombie and obstacle course races across the country. Nerds flock to experience a taste of what the highly anticipated zombie apocalypse might be like.

The point of the race is to stay alive. Participants are given three health flags and they must complete the race with at least one of them to be considered alive at the end of the race.

If you decide to participate, I have put together a few tips you can use to stay alive. Consider sharing them with the people you will run with and formulating a general plan before you begin.

Tips

1)  Go with a group of friends or make friends at the start! People are there to have fun so don’t be afraid to approach them. Groups are incredibly important in this 5K. You are not going to make it alone.

2) Sprint, but let the faster sprinters go ahead of you. The zombies target them and it is easier to dodge the undead while they are distracted.

3) Dodge and twist. Keep your health tags on your back so its easier to swing them away from the zombie’s reach. Apparently, zombies don’t care if you put your tags near your no-no zone and will grab them anyway. Save them, and yourself, some awkward pain.

3) Conserve energy between zombie areas. Trust me, you aren’t making your best 5K time in this race. Walk with your group or jog slowly until you reach a spread of zombies, group up and move forward.

4) The less clothing the better. It gets hot.

The one thing I learned from facing groups of zombies through this wooded 5K is this: without weapons and good vehicles, we are all going to die.

Prepare for the zombie apocalypse.
