Why Windows Phone 8 Might Hurt Microsoft Initially

Yesterday, Microsoft held a press conference and preview event for Windows Phone 8 and dropped a pretty big bomb.  With a whole lot of new features, the key feature everyone is talking about is that it will not work with current Windows phones.  While current Windows phone owners will get a 7.8 upgrade with a few of the enhancements, it only covers about a third of them.  Chris and I had a mini twitter debate on this and we will definitely cover it during the podcast this weekend.  This is a pretty big deal and I’ll discuss my thoughts after the break. Lumia 900 update now live!

The Lumia 900

Monday’s expected software update for the Lumia 900 has arrived a few days early. As many of you are aware early adopters of the Lumia 900 have been experiencing sporadic data connections (yours truly included) and in some cases battery issues. The update is live through both the Zune Desktop client as well as the Windows Phone 7 Connector client for the Mac. The fix is installing now and I will update my review with new impressions after the weekend.

Unyielding Review: Nokia Lumia 900

The Lumia 900

For those of you that listen to the podcast you know I’m a complete gadget fiend and I’ll buy almost anything that blinks, blips, or boops. I was an early adopter of Windows Phone buying a HD7 on launch day with T-Mobile. Despite the lack luster screen and the abysmal battery life (both hardware related) I loved the OS and its take on how a user should interact with their phone. As Jesse and I discussed on a recent podcast, out of the phone OS’s I’ve used Windows Phone is the only one that I actively miss when I switch devices. But alas, I am nothing if not fickle and my lust for new hardware soon saw me moving on.

The Lumia 900 is the Windows Phone I’ve been waiting for since launch…almost. This review will touch on some of the highs and lows I’ve encountered so far with the device.

Audible App in the Works for Windows Phone

WPCentral has posted some footage of a beta Audible app for Windows Phone. The app looks to function well with all the expected features, and kudos to audible for the work done in making it mesh well with the Metro UI.

Since starting up an Audible account last year I typically go through two books a month. With my planned switch back to Windows Phone coming soon, access to an Audible app would have been greatly missed.

As I’ve told people before, live tiles are a great balance between app launcher and widget. Being able to pin a book to the start menu is a fantastic way to reduce taps when trying to get at the content you want.

With Audible (hopefully) coming soon to the Windows Marketplace that’s one more must have app to check off our list for the OS.
